Upgrade Your PC for Less

Tech Deals Tuesday, featuring the MSI CS61 Gaming Laptop for $499

November 17, 2015 | by Josh

MSI CX61 Gaming Laptop, $499 + Free Shipping (after $100 Mail in Rebate, was $699)

This middle-class 15″ gaming laptop is sporting an Intel Core i5 4210M (2.6 GHz), 8 GB Memory, a 750 GB HDD, and an NVIDIA GeForce 920M 2 GB. While this machine might choke on Fallout 4 (even the highest-end PCs have) it would do well as a general-purpose gaming rig, or for a work laptop if you’re a developer. The processor is a good-to-great option, but the mechanical 5400rpm hard drive is a dog. I’d upgrade that 5400 rpm HDD immediately (which will void your warranty), and while I’m in there I’d consider upgrading the memory. 8GB of memory is plenty for many, but this machine is upgradable to 32GB if you end up needing to turn this machine into a real beast.

Suggested upgrade:

Optional upgrade:

Logitech C270 HD Webcam, $14.99 + S&H (ends 11/17, was $39.99)

Use the code CDH163522 in the shopping cart before checkout to pick up this webcam. If you find yourself Skyping or Google Hangouting more-and-more this will be a noticeable upgrade over your laptop’s built in camera and mic.

Sapphire Radeon R9 390X, 8GB 512-Bit GDDR5 Video Card, $349.99 + S&H (ends 11/17, after $15 Rebate + $65 Coupon, was $429.99)

Use the code IRM163492 in the shopping cart before checkout to get this price. This is a slightly better option than the MSI below because of the Sapphire’s superior cooling, allowing them to overclock to 1500MHz.

  • Outputs: 1 x DL-DVI-D, 1 x HDMI, 3 x DisplayPort

MSI Radeon R9 390X, 8GB 512-Bit GDDR5 Video Card, $349.99 + Free Shipping (after $30 MiR, was $399.99)

Once the Sapphire deal expires at midnight on 11/17, this is the next best thing. Nearly identical card and specs, but with a different cooling setup it’s clocked at 1060MHz.

  • Outputs: 2 x DL-DVI-D, 1 x HDMI, 1 x DisplayPort

Amazon Fire HD 10, 10.1″ HD Display, Wi-Fi, 16 GB, $199.99 + Free Shipping (was $229.99)

This is, seemingly, the first time that the Fire HD 10 tablets have gone on sale, and $30 off is enough to impulse-buy the webcam above and still have money leftover! It has a 1280×800 display, a quad-core processor and dual cameras. It also has a microSD slot that can handle an additional 128GB of storage.
