Upgrade Your Desktop Computer Without A Complete Overhaul

July 23, 2015 | by Josh

If you’re like me, you’ve focused your technology spending on laptops and gadgets recently and let your desktop get a little bit out-of-date. Don’t get me wrong, my desktop is still the most powerful rig in the house, but it’s frustrating when it struggles to run some of the games that I’d like to play with my friends.

Newegg is running a shellshocker deal right now (meaning it’s up while supplies last) that will help us out. It’s a combo of motherboard/CPU/memory that will more than refresh your desktop.

7/29 Update: SuperCombo Upgrade Pack: Intel Core i5-4590 Quad-Core 3.3GHz CPU, ASUS Z87-A (NFC Express EDITION), HyperX Savage 8GB Memory, $299.00 (after Mail in Rebate, originally $348.98)

SuperCombo Upgrade Pack: Intel Core i5-4590 Quad-Core, ASUS Z87-PRO LGA 1150 MOBO, HyperX Fury 8GB Memory, $254.99 (after Mail in Rebate, originally $373.97)

Saving over $100 is why I checked this deal out, but I was sold when I saw the Asus motherboard. They have been putting out great product, and the last time I needed technical troubleshooting help with one of their mobos, I was forwarded directly to their Tier 3 technical support. I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

HyperX Fury 8GB Memory DDR3 1866, $47.99 (originally $119.00)

I’d combine this with a 2nd DIMM of memory, because you’d be hard-pressed to score 16GB of highly-rated memory this cheap.

Intel Core i7-4771 Haswell Quad-Core 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1150, $314.99 (originally $328.99)

The bundled motherboard’s socket will also give you the opportunity to upgrade to one of these bad-boys in the future. It’s a pricey beast right now, but hopefully it’ll come down in price by the time you’re ready to upgrade.
